Need to be among the first to know who Mitt Romney’s running mate will be?

There’s an app for that.

The Romney campaign Tuesday announced the release of a new mobile application that will serve as the “first official distribution channel” for the news of Romney’s vice presidential nominee.

The release of the app, which is available for iPhone and Android, comes on the last day of the presumptive GOP nominee’s six-day foreign trip. Romney is expected to make a decision on his running mate sometime after his return to the United States and before the Republican National Convention, which kicks off in Tampa on Aug. 27.

“The historic announcement is getting closer,” Beth Myers, Romney’s senior adviser and main veep vetter, said in a statement. “Soon everyone will know who Mitt Romney selects as his Vice Presidential running mate. With this new app, users can be the first to know the second member of America’s Comeback Team.”

Among those reported to have made it onto Romney’s VP shortlist are former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Ohio Sen. Rob Portman.

Four years ago, Obama announced via text message the selection of Joe Biden as his running mate. The 3 a.m. message arrived on users’ mobile devices several hours after news of Obama’s choice had already leaked out.
