Hickenlooper invokes Aurora shooting

Popular Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, who has been mentioned often as a young Democratic leader with potential for national office, said recent tragedies in Colorado provide an example of how Americans can come together still to answer President Obama’s call for a more united country. When President Obama visited the state after devastating wildfires and a deadly shooting at a movie theater in a suburb of Denver, he “brought a message of support on behalf of the entire country,” Hickenlooper said. “We weren’t Democrats or Republicans then,” Hickenlooper said, “we were Americans simply trying to help one another.”

That focus of cooperation during Obama’s visit is exactly the focus of his presidency, too, Hickenlooper said, a focus on “we, not me.”

“He knows, to move our country forward, it takes we, and not me,” Hickenlooper said. “We need to finish what we started.”
