CNN’s O’Brien, Sununu wring fun from Medicare

Upon the selection of Rep. Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney’s running mate, Washington’s chattering class predicted a turn toward substance, toward discussions of budget numbers and the tough choices faced by the country. They were right. What it failed to mention, though, is that it’s fun, too, as evidenced by this protracted, smiling, document-heavy, wonky beatdown of Romney surrogate John Sununu by CNN’s Soledad O’Brien.

That took place on yesterday’s “Starting Point” program. Today, O’Brien revisited the matter and cited various facts and documents and testimony to buttress her case. At the end, she declares victory over Sununu: “So while we here at ‘Starting Point’ always enjoy a healthy, even if at times heated, debate, when it comes to the facts, we like to hold all our guests accountable, including Gov. Sununu.” And that was the cheap part. O’Brien was clearly hungering for another shot at this topic; Sununu should have been able to do likewise.
