National Rifle Association (NRA) President David Keene received some criticism last week for concluding a widely watched news conference with this thought juxtaposition:

As I indicated at the outset, this is the beginning of a serious conversation. We won’t be taking questions today.

Yet Keene didn’t close the door on accountability. He noted that the organization’s public affairs director, Andrew Arulanandam, was around for cornering. And then he issued a strange assurance: “We will be willing to talk to anybody beginning on Monday.”

Christmas Eve Q&A with the NRA? Count me in for that!

So this morning the Erik Wemple Blog rang up the NRA offices, with stunning results: Keene and Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre, it appears, are not sitting at a bank of phones ready to consider questions from reporters. Here is the outgoing message from the organization’s offices:

Thank you for calling the National Rifle Association. Our offices are closed Monday December 24 and Tuesday December 25 for the Christmas holiday. We will reopen Wednesday December 26 at 8:30 a.m. EST. If you are calling to join or renew your NRA membership or check on your magazine subscription, press 1 now. If you would like to leave a message for a member of the NRA staff and know either their extension or name, please press 2 now.
