Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) this morning on Fox News credited the cable network for extensive coverage that placed pressure on Mexico to release Marine veteran Jon Hammar, who had been held in a Matamoros prison for four months. “Thanks to Fox, [Bill] O’Reilly, Greta [van Susteren], all of you — all of the press helped but you guys really came to bat,” said the congresswoman on the Fox program “America’s Newsroom.”

During its daytime and prime-time coverage, Fox blanketed the story of Hammar, a veteran of both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. He attempted to cross into Mexico carrying an heirloom shotgun that he attempted to register with customs authorities. Mexican officials threw him in prison anyway.

Though Hammar’s release was announced last Friday, it’s still unclear exactly what prompted it. He is now headed to his family’s home in Palmetto Bay, Fla.
