Towering broadcaster Barbara Walters will leave broadcasting in May 2014. That comes from a “person familiar with her plans” (Huffington Post), a “person familiar with the plan” (New York Times), and no readily identifiable source (Deadline). Makes sense: Walters recently had health problems and “The View,” which Walters co-created and executive-produces, is undergoing some transitional turbulence.

Walters, 83, has racked up five decades of stellar work on television, and so there’ll be a full year of tributes and celebrations to fete her work. Perhaps she’ll come forth at some point and talk about all of this. For now, official channels are quiet. An ABC News rep declined to comment on the goings-on, whatever they may be.
