Michael Sullivan/Augusta Chronicle via AP – Heavy ice brings down pine trees in downtown Augusta, Ga. Across the South, winter-weary residents woke up Wednesday to a region encased in ice, snow and freezing rain.

This morning, CNN correspondent George Howell had something of an exclusive. He was riding in a car during a live report for CNN, and there appeared to be very few other vehicles on the highways. As the car made its way down the icy thoroughfare, Howell talked about how “layer upon layer” of ice was due to pound metro Atlanta. Then he said this: “If you don’t have to be on the road, it’s best not to be.”

Unless you really need a good live shot, that is.
