Please excuse our obsession with this matter of cable-news programming: CNN’s on-again, on-again coverage of missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 has bumped its evening debate show “Crossfire” for yet another night. The string of pre-emptions started March 11, blasting the ratings-challenged debate show off the airwaves in favor of “special” two-hour editions of “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.” On tonight’s program, Blitzer discussed, inter alia, the ocean “pings” consistent with black-box emissions. “24/7 RACE TO FIND SOURCE OF UNDERWATER SIGNALS,” read a chyron on the “Situation Room.” CNN’s Erin Burnett followed with her own programming on the same topic. Lesson: Continued pinging coverage > political debate stuff.
