In a segment last night titled “Human Extinction Watch,” Daily Show host Jon Stewart alighted upon a May 13 utterance from Fox News anchor Shepard Smith: “We’ve passed the point of no return. Climate change: It is real, the science is true.”

In reaction to that quote, Stewart roared: “Oh my god, we’re all gonna die! You know this is serious if someone on Fox News just said climate change is real. I believe that is a sign of the apocalypse.”

It bears noting that Smith’s title at Fox News is chief news anchor and managing editor for breaking news at the cable network. That means he’s not likely to stray off too sharply into the world of opinion, as would, say, Fox News talent Greg Gutfeld on the excellent roundtable show “The Five”: “We corrupted science, which is why now, especially even with climate change and things like that, you have to challenge all dogma because science is never settled. It’s never settled. It’s been poisoned by politics and ideological crusaders. But you’ve got to keep fighting it. Every space of your lives is hijacked by lies.”
