‘Supercommittee’ staffing
The “supercommittee” has now named its two lead staffers. Mark Prater, chief tax counsel for Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee, will lead the team. Sarah Kuehl, a Democratic staffer on the Senate Budget Committee with particular expertise in entitlement and health programs, will serve as deputy director.
The thing to notice here is that the lead Republican staffer knows taxes and the lead Democratic staffer knows entitlements. It’s a sign that the two sides are at least thinking about the relevant compromises they’re going to need to make if the committee is going to succeed.
