Mitt Romney

Romney says he paid 13 percent in taxes for the last 10 years. That doesn’t tell us much.

Romney says he paid more than 13 percent in taxes for the last 10 years. But he didn't specify 13 percent of what.

Mitt Romney’s budget is a fantasy, Part II

Mitt Romney, who has refused to officially name even one offset for his tax cut, has taken the bulk of the mortgage-interest deduction off the table. In his 10-year deficit-reduction plan, he has taken Social Security, Medicare, and defense off the table.

We’re having a ‘serious conversation’ over the issues!

In my experience, you're actually getting a more serious conversation over the issues if you listen directly to the two campaigns than if you're reading about the campaign as filtered through much of the media.

We're Gonna Carry That Interest, for a Long Time

What is the carried interest loophole, and why doesn’t Romney want to close it?

While we don't know a lot about Mitt Romney's tax burden, we do know that it was recently around 15 percent, due to a loophole in the tax code that he himself has signalled he wants to repeal. But now he's sounding more like he wants to keep it around.

Wonkbook: The Medicare — and Medicaid — wars

With Ryan on the ticket, Medicare has moved to the center of the election. But in policy terms, it's Medicaid that's most under threat.

Budget Fail

Romney’s budget plan is a fantasy

To keep his budget promises, Mitt Romney would have to cut all programs that aren't Medicare, Social Security or defense by an average of 40 percent in 2016 and 57 percent in 2022. This will never happen.

Stupid candidate tricks

Mitt Romney’s constitutional amendment would bar Paul Ryan from the presidency

Three years ago, Mitt Romney proposed a constitutional amendment that would say "the president has to spend three years working in business before he becomes president of the United States." That would disqualify Paul Ryan.

Mythbusting

The Republican ticket’s big Medicare myth

It's a conservative myth that the White House hasn't put forward a Medicare reform plan. What that line really means is that White House hasn't put forward some variant of Paul Ryan's plan. But they've put forward their own.

Everything is terrible

Higher productivity doesn’t mean higher wages

Romney claimed in his interview with Tyrangiel, "higher productivity means higher wages for the American worker." No it doesn't, or at least it hasn't for the past forty years.

Mitt Romney’s wrong: You can balance the budget through taxes. But you may not want to.

"You can’t get to a balanced budget by simply raising taxes," says Mitt Romney. As a matter of fact, that's not true. You can get from where we are to a balanced budget by raising taxes. You may not want to. But you can.
