Microsoft shows off new ‘Mango’ Windows Phone update

Microsoft announced its new phone platform — Windows Phone 7.1, codenamed Mango — at a media event Tuesday in New York City.

Among the platform’s promised “500 new features” are better multi-tasking, threaded messaging and more social integration. The phone will have “tight” ties with Facebook, Bing and Microsoft’s newly acquired service, Skype.

The phone also has a feature called “Local Scout” that will recommend places to eat and places to go for anywhere in the country.
