Pac-Man, Portal, Heavy Rain among games headed to Smithsonian

The Smithsonian American Art Museum revealed Thursday which 80 games made it into its exhibition, “The Art of Video Games.” The exhibition will explore the 40-year history of video games as an artistic medium.

The exhibition, curated by video game collector Chris Melissinos, determined which games should be included in the museum by asking gamers to vote online for their favorites.

The winning group includes games such as Pac-Man, Super Mario World, Portal and Heavy Rain.

The museum said 119,000 people in 175 countries participated in the vote. Voting proved so popular that the museum had to extend it until April 17.

In addition to the 80 games voted into the exhibition, five games have been selected for visitors to play while visiting the show: Pac-Man, Super Mario Brothers, The Secret of Monkey Island, Myst and World of Warcraft.

The exhibition opens March 16, 2012, at the museum. You can see a PDF of the full list of the winning games here.
