Sony’s next-generation portable, or NGP, may face launch delays as a result of damage to Sony’s facilities in the region of Japan affected by the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.
Sony Computer Entertainment America president Jack Tretton said in an interview with Bloomberg that the company may stagger its worldwide launch in Asia, Europe and the U.S. Tretton did not say which region would be the first to get the new handheld.
The NGP was expected to launch worldwide in time for the holiday season.
Sony announced the NGP in January. The new handheld will not use the same proprietary Universal Media Disc format as the PlayStation Portable; games will be available on flash-based memory cards or via digital download.
The company recently launched the Xperia Play, an Android-based gaming smartphone, in Europe, Hong Kong and Taiwan last week. It’s expected to hit the U.S. this spring.
