It’s an old rumor that’s come around again — the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sprint is getting the iPhone this October.
Citing unnamed “people familiar with the matter,” the report says that the company will also begin carrying the iPhone 4 at the same time.
A Sprint spokesman declined to comment on the report.
If true, the report is welcome news to Sprint customers who have watched enviously as the iPhone went to the nation’s other CDMA-based network, Verizon.
The addition of the iPhone would be a boon to Sprint, thought by some to be in a fight for its life against a T-Mobile and AT&T merger, but it could have a negative effect on the company’s unlimited data plans. Users of Apple’s iPhone are notoriously data-hungry and will be tempted by Sprint’s unlimited plans. But unlimited plans have not lasted long on iPhone-carrying networks, as both AT&T and Verizon have stopped offering the all-you-can-eat plans after adopting Apple’s handset.
