Xperia Play, Sony Ericsson’s PlayStation phone, available from Verizon next week

Verizon will begain carrying the Xperia Play on May 26; preorders start on May 19.
Start doing your thumb exercises. The Xperia Play, aka the PlayStation Phone, will be in Verizon stores on May 26 for $199.99 with a two-year contract.

It requires a Nationwide Talk plan — starting at $39.99 a month — and an unlimited data plan, for at least $29.99 per month.

It will be available for pre-order starting Thursday.

The phone has a slide-out keyboard panel with two analog touch joysticks, PlayStation controls, a D-pad and shoulder buttons, like a handheld device.

It will come pre-loaded with seven games, including Madden NFl ‘11, Crash Bandicoot and Tetris.

As for the phone portion, the handset runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, has a 1GHz processor, front- and rear-facing cameras and a 4-inch multitouch screen.

The Xperia Play has gotten fairly good reviews in Europe, though reviewers have said it needs a lot more quality software to truly become a gaming device.
