Washington area federal government offices are closed for the second straight day because of superstorm Sandy.
But as Federal Diary columnist Joe Davidson noted, being off site doesn’t mean a government employee is off duty if they have teleworking status.As the closing announcement notes:
“Non-emergency employees (including employees on pre-approved paid leave) will be granted excused absence (administrative leave) for the number of hours they were scheduled to work unless they are: required to telework, on official travel outside of the Washington, D.C., area, on leave without pay, or on an alternative work schedule (AWS) day off.”

It’s times like these when the issue of teleworking is front and center. Are you someone eligible for teleworking but have not been approved? If you have been approved — and have electrical power — is it fair that you may be required to work or take annual leave while others essentially have a day off?
