Some State Department offices reopen

Damage assessment and repair work continues in the State Department complex that experienced a fire early Tuesday morning but most employees will be able to return to work Thursday.

State Department employees have been advised to contact supervisors on their work status Thursday morning.

The Diplotots day care center will be open Thursday. The normal drop off location for the daycare will be closed, however.

Lingering smoke odors within the complex are not harmful, employees have been informed. Contractors will be on site until repair work is complete.

Before 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, a fire broke out on the fifth floor of the Columbia Plaza complex at 2401 E. St NW, and several offices sustained smoke and water damage. No one was injured. Twelve State Department offices were affected by a closure of work spaces Wednesday.
