Slaves quarried sandstone used to build Smithsonian castle

Our Washington Post colleague Manuel Roig-Franzia penned a provocative story in Thursday’s Style section about new scholarly research confirming a link between slavery and the building of  of the Smithsonian.

It turns out the familiar red sandstone used to build the Smithsonian Castle was quarried by slaves before the Civil War.
