Ray LaHood will resign as Secretary of Transportation as soon as a successor is confirmed, our colleague Al Kamen reported Tuesday morning.

LaHood, who represented Illinois in the House of Representatives  as a Republican, told the Associated Press that being secretary has been “the best job I’ve ever had in public service,” but that he had informed President Obama after the election that it was time for him to depart.

Our colleague Ashley Halsey reports that LaHood launched a crusade against distracted driving during his tenure at Transportation.
