A few items that caught our attention:
• The Department of Veterans affairs is facing a massive backlog of disability claims, with veterans in Maryland waiting for more than a year in some cases for the agency to issue its decisions, according to a front-page article in today’s Washington Post.
• House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said he is open to cost-cutting measures that affect federal pay and benefits, so long as they are part of a comprehensive deficit-reduction plan that asks others to sacrifice, according to an article in The Federal Times.
• Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa quelled rumors that he is up for a cabinet nomination, saying he is “firmly committed” to finishing his term, which ends on June 30. He had been mentioned as a possible candidate to replace Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, who announced his departure last week.
