Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) on Friday requested detailed information about a federal investigation into alleged retaliation against dozens of Veterans Affairs employees who say they tried to expose the agency’s hospital scandal.

McCaskill, who heads the Senate Financial and Contracting Oversight Subcommittee, issued a letter to the Office of Special Counsel asking for specifics about the number of complaints at each location, how many managers and senior executives were involved, and any disciplinary actions that have been taken.

The OSC, a federal investigative and prosecutorial agency that protects government workers against retaliation, announced earlier this month that it was examining complaints from 37 VA whistleblowers who say they faced reprisal for reporting records manipulation and scheduling problems at VA medical centers.

“As you know, the federal government relies on whistleblowers to report government waste, fraud, abuse and the mismanagement of taxpayer dollars,” McCaskill said in her letter. “Their protection is not only mandated by law but also necessary to ensure the successful oversight of government affairs.”

McCaskill, who said she wants the details to understand the scope of the retaliation problem, asked that OSC provide the requested information by July 3.
