The 6-foot-2, 292-pound Gettis, a second-team all-Big Ten honoree last season and fifth-round draft pick out of Iowa, is familiar with what it is like to be replaced in the lineup because of injury. He played only two games his junior season at Iowa for that reason.
Regardless the circumstances, he was grateful to start in his first NFL game.
“Good or bad, I’ll replay this,” Gettis said Saturday after practice. “There’s always something you can work on better. You’ve got to work like you’re the starter. It’s just a great opportunity to be out there. It went decent.”
Chester started every game at right guard last season. He sat out practice Saturday but did take the field toward the end of the workout to test his ankle.
Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said that Chester could return to action late this week, but until that time, Gettis will continue working with the first team.
