Big crowds in Ashburn for Redskins’ fan appreciation day

After anemic fan attendance on the first eight days of training camp, the Washington Redskins saw a crowd that appears to be in the thousands for fan appreciation day Saturday at Redskins Park.

An hour before the start of practice, traffic was backed up on Loudoun County for roughly a half mile.

In camp for the first time is punter Sav Rocca, who finally obtained his work visa, flew from Australia and now is on the field with his teammates, wearing No. 6.

And speaking of jersey numbers: rookie linebacker Ryan Kerrigan is now sporting No. 91 after initially wearing No. 53.

There is no sign of right tackle Jammal Brown, who on Sunday signed a five-year, $27.5 million contract. Also not in sight is undrafted free agent linebacker Kyle O’Donnell, a Liberty University product.

Watching practice are tight end Chris Cooley (knee), receivers Brandon Banks (knee) and Malcolm Kelly (foot), running back Ryan Torain (hand) and backup tackle Clint Oldenburg (sick).

With no sign of Brown, yesterday’s newly-signed right tackle Sean Locklear is taking first-team snaps.

Mike Jones covers the Washington Redskins for The Washington Post. When not writing about a Redskins development of some kind – which is rare – he can be found screaming and cheering at one of his kids’ softball, baseball, soccer or basketball games.
