Brian Orakpo: LaRon Landry’s return ‘like ketchup on a burger’

Washington Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo says the return of strong safety LaRon Landry would make an already strong defensive unit that much better.

“Just another playmaker out there,” Orakpo says of a Redskins’ defense that ranks 11th in the NFL in total defense through two weeks and has given up the sixth-fewest points in the league. “We’ve obviously been doing a good job out there. We’ve obviously been doing well so far. But it just adds another playmaker. It’s like ketchup on a burger. We’ll be excited if he’s able to go. We’ll be excited to have him out there.”

Landry last season recorded 85 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and an interception in just nine games, That level of production would certainly be welcomed by the Redskins. The fifth-year pro has been sidelined for the first two weeks of the season with a strained right hamstring. He hopes to make his season debut Monday night in Dallas, but said the decision ultimately is coach Mike Shanahan’s to make.

Shanahan said Wednesday afternoon that it’s too soon to know whether Landry will play Monday night. Landry was listed as limited in practice but said he plans to ramp up his level of activity each day as he progresses toward Monday.

Said Shanahan: “It’s day-by-day. If he keeps on improving and getting better, hopefully he’ll be ready. But, I thought that last week and it didn’t work out. …You’ve got to find out if somebody’s in football shape and try to get them back in football shape and that’s what we’ll try to judge during the week.”
