DeJon Gomes adjusts to practice without coaches

Ten rookies attended the Redskins’ informal workout in May, but only six showed up for Tuesday’s workout, including former Nebraska defensive back DeJon Gomes.

The Redskins’ fifth-round pick made the trip from Nebraska to participate with his new teammates during this week’s three-day workout. Gomes played cornerback during the team session, going one-on-one against receivers Malcolm Kelley and fellow rookie Leonard Hankerson

“I’ve been playing football all my life and I’ve had coaches out there,” Gomes said on Tuesday. “So it’s been a little different.”

After the player-organized mini-camp ends Thursday, Gomes plans to train with his former teammates at Nebraska, where he said he most likely will remain until the lockout is lifted. He remains optimistic about the 2011 football season.

“I don’t see America without football,” he said.
