Donovan McNabb trade to Vikings expected to be completed today

Negotiations for the trade that will send Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb to the Minnesota Vikings are in the final stages, and it is expected that the deal will be finalized some time today, according to a league source.

As expected, McNabb will have to agree to rework his contract, which calls for him to receive a $10 million roster bonus on Sept. 12. But the quarterback has no problem doing so, and is in discussions with his agent Fletcher Smith to make that possible.

The Redskins will be receiving a sixth-round pick in the 2012 draft, and a conditional sixth-round pick in 2013, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

Minnesota has coveted McNabb for some time now, and the Vikings were mentioned as a possible destination for the six-time Pro Bowl quarterback even before Washington acquired him from Philadelphia for a second- and fourth-round pick last year.

The Vikings run a system that is very similar to the one McNabb played in for 11 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. And Minnesota is looking for a veteran to mentor rookie quarterback Christian Ponder, whom the Vikings drafted 12th overall out of Florida State.

Ponder on his twitter account Wednesday morning expressed an eagerness to learn from McNabb.

“Excited to have McNabb join. Will learn a lot from a Pro Bowler,” Ponder tweeted. “But that doesn’t mean I’m not still fighting to start week 1!”
