Eagles defensive player to watch: CB Nnamdi Asomugha

How he beats you: The Eagles’ top free agent pickup of the offseason, Nnamdi Asomugha is regarded as one of the best cover corners in the game. At 6-foot-2, 210pounds, Asomugha has great size to go with excellent speed. He’s strong in press coverage and makes it hard for receivers to get off the line and up to speed in their routes. Says Redskins receiver Jabar Gaffney, “He’s tall, fast, long arms, great instincts. He can do it all, and a guy that can do it all, you just have to be at your best that day and take a little extra time and do your work.”

How to stop him: Crisp route running is one of the best ways, otherwise Asomugha will make a receiver pay. “Be precise and don’t give anything away,” Gaffney says. “If you run a sloppy route, he can go all the way with it. You just have to line up and play him. And if you don’t, he’ll get a pick on you. Go at him like you go at anybody.”

Bottom line: The Redskins receivers acknowledge Asomugha’s talents, but are far from intimidated. As Gaffney said, attention to detail and sticking with assignments will pave the way for success. Said fellow receiver Santana Moss, “He’s a guy that’s athletically gifted, but scheme stops a lot of guys. When you change your offensive fronts and get into your schemes, you can get guys open. He’s an individually gifted corner and one of the best in what he’s gifted with, but I feel like if they play a scheme that’s not letting us be effective, we’ll switch up our schemes to get us free.”
