Graham Gano is perfect again

After a shaky first three months of the season, the Redskins’ field goal unit finally seems to have regained some stability. For a fourth consecutive week, kicker Graham Gano succeeded on all of his attempts.

Gano made all four of his field goal attempts Sunday, including one from 53 yards out and another from 47 yards out.

For the month of December, Gano is 13 for 13 on field goal attempts.

“That’s what you have to do,” Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. “You have to be able to come through in those situations to keep your job in the National Football League. I was really pleased with him coming through, 53-yarder. … We had a chance to go into overtime because he made that field goal [from 47]. He stepped up.”

Said Gano: “Yeah. It feels good. That’s what I’m supposed to do. It’s what I’m expected to do. If not, they’ll find someone else. I try to go in there every week and get better.”

Gano, who is now 30-for-39 on the season, credited a healthy and improved line for this month’s success.

All season, the Redskins have had to plug in different players along the line because of injuries to starters, and that inexperience had a lot to do with the breakdowns that led to four of Gano’s field goal attempts getting blocked. Now with several weeks under their belts, the Redskins’ revamped field goal linemen have executed with consistency.

“There was a lot of injuries in the beginning with the protection and guys going down, but we’ve been doing well in practice and I think it’s showing on the field,” Gano said. “We have good protection, good operation and especially on that field, it takes everybody. I felt like I hit the ball well today. You just have to adapt and I feel like that’s what we’re doing.”
