Jammal Brown injures finger; Mike Sellers back with fullbacks

Redskins’coach Mike Shanahan said right tackle Jammal Brown injured his right ring finger in practice and that x-rays will be taken to see if he broke it. But the coach expects Brown to play Thursday.

Veteran Mike Sellers has spent all of preseason working as a tight end, but he was back with the fullbacks today. Shanahan said Sellers will be used as a tight end, H-back and fullback Thursday.

Shanahan praised the production of second-year fullback Darrel Young, who is working to unseat Sellers.

Shanahan said he hasn’t decided who will start at quarterback on Thursday, but Offensive Coordinator Kyle Shanahan said the decision has been made, just not revealed. Mike Shanahan said, “Oh there has, well (Kyle) hasn’t told me yet,” and then laughed. But he wouldn’t tell. Both Shanahans said they “feel comfortable going into that first game with either of them.”

Kyle Shanahan said John Beck and Rex Grossman are making the choice of a starter a difficult decision. “I’m hoping one of them separates himself a bit to make it easier on us,” Shanahan said. The offensive coordinator expects both to get time with the starters on Thursday.

Kyle Shanahan said rookie running back Roy Helu took “as big a jump as anybody from week 1 to week 2” of the preseason, and believes Helu will continue to make big plays for the team.

Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett said rookies Ryan Kerrigan and Jarvis Jenkins showed improvement in the second preseason game, and that both looked more comfortable. Haslett praised Kerrigan as a fast learner and while he was encouraged by Jenkins’ development, he said he would like to see more consistency out of the defensive end.

Haslett said rookie cornerback Brandyn Thompson “stood out” to him in Friday’s game and that he was pleased with how the Boise State product took advantage of the opportunity given to him with veterans sidelined.

Haslett wants to see more turnovers out of his defense in this week’s preseason game.

Watching practice today again were safety LaRon Landry (hamstring), Kareem Moore (knee), return man Brandon Banks (knee), tight end Chris Cooley (knee), defensive end Adam Carriker (blisters), receiver Malcolm Kelly (foot). Except for Carriker, all those players have been ruled out of Thursday’s game at this point.
