Josh Wilson records first INT as a Redskin

It took him 13 weeks, but cornerback Josh Wilson finally recorded his first interception as a member of the Washington Redskins, a critical pick that prevented a touchdown.

Wilson picked off a Tom Brady pass in the back of the end zone to prevent the Patriots from going up by 14 points in the fourth quarter.

The play set up Washington for a final drive to either tie or win the game. The drive ended when receiver Santana Moss tipped a Rex Grossman pass to linebacker Jerod Mayo at the New England 7-yard line to kill Washington’s chances.

“Right there at the end, we had a chance,” Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. “You score down there, you probably go for two points, or at least we had a chance for the two points, or you decide to go in overtime. Either way, you’ve got a chance to win the football game, so disappointed when you can’t take advantage of an opportunity. Josh made a great play back there.”

Wilson said he had a good idea of the play that the Patriots were going to run, and he credited safety Oshiomogho Atogwe for helping in coverage.

“They had ran that play a couple times on us,” said Wilson, who signed during the offseason with his hometown team as a free agent. “I knew it was going to be tough play to make. [Atogwe] was in a great spot, made Brady put some air under it. I was able to get in there and take it away.

“I anticipated he was going to throw the ball,” Wilson added. “I was on back-side, fling it up and I knew I was going to get the ball....I was thinking if I didn’t catch the ball, nobody was going to catch the ball.”
