Kory Lichtensteiger says he’ll be back for season opener

Left guard Kory Lichtensteiger says he’s confident he will return to the Washington Redskins’ lineup in time for the Sept. 9 regular season opener at New Orleans.

“I don’t know for sure, but definitely by [the] regular season,” Lichtensteiger said Monday. “They’re just going to see how I feel and go by that. That’s what I’m trying to do. It feels good right now.”

Lichtensteiger underwent arthroscopic surgery after aggravating a left knee injury in the opening days of training camp.

“It was that second practice,” Lichtensteiger said. “I kind of tweaked it a little bit. I was hoping it was nothing but the doc checked it out and thought it needed an MRI, and then from there they wanted to clean it out…. There were some options. It was kind of put into percentages for me. There was a lot lower percentage of making it through the year incident-free without having it scoped and cleaned out. So I kind of took the smart mathematical choice and got it cleaned out.”

Lichtensteiger did some rehabilitation work on the field Monday while his teammates practiced. He has not practiced since his arthroscopic surgery and sat out last week’s preseason opener at Buffalo.

Coach Mike Shanahan has said that Lichtensteiger might have played in the third preseason game if the team had wanted to try that approach. But the Redskins don’t want to take that risk. They are targeting Lichtensteiger’s return for the regular season opener, according to Shanahan.

Lichtensteiger said he thinks he could play effectively in the opener even if he misses the entire preseason.

“It’s not ideal, by any means,” Lichtensteiger said. “I’m just hoping I can get some good, hard practices before I get thrown into a game situation. If I can do that, I think I’ll be all right.”
