Mike Shanahan uncertain on Tashard Choice’s debut or role

Running back Tashard Choice said there is a “100 percent chance” that he will make his Washington Redskins debut Sunday when his former team, the Dallas Cowboys, come to town Sunday. But coach Mike Shanahan sounded less certain about the fourth-year pro’s status.

The Cowboys waived Choice Oct. 29, and the Redskins claimed him, despite a hamstring injury that was still healing. Choice was cleared to practice last week, but was inactive for the game at Miami.

“We worked him out before our game and he felt a twinge in that hamstring. He didn’t feel like he was 100 percent,” Shanahan said. “How he’s going to do this week, I can’t tell you for sure, but he’s feeling a lot more comfortable with our system. He’s biting at the bit to get going. I think there’s a big upside with him. But after a week of practice, I can’t tell you for sure.”

With Tim Hightower on the injured reserve list, Shanahan and the Redskins are trying to find a featured back for their struggling offense. Ryan Torain and Roy Helu have yet to prove themselves capable of shouldering the load. But Shanahan said he isn’t sure exactly what kind of role Choice will play once he is cleared for action.

“You don’t know about running backs or safeties until they play,” Shanahan said. “People can tell you a running back is a good running back or a safety is a good safety, but at least in my experience, until they actually put the pads on and they do it in live situations, you don’t know for sure.”
