NFL season will open on a Wednesday

The 2012 NFL season is scheduled to open Sept. 5 with a Wednesday night game, the league announced Tuesday.

The sport’s season-opening game usually is on a Thursday night, but the game was scheduled for one night earlier to avoid a potential conflict with President Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention, the NFL announced.

The game will start at 8:30 p.m. and will be televised by NBC. The New York Giants, the reigning Super Bowl champions, will host the game at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

The Giants’ opponent has not been determined.
