Quick Hits: Fourth-quarter penalties as damaging as interceptions

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said he hopes the team grows and learns from mistakes made against the such as the interceptions in the fourth quarter.

As important in the coach’s mind is the need to eliminate penalties, particulaly those in the fourth quarter by DeAngelo Hall and Rob Jackson for unnecessary roughness.

Shanahan likes the strides the Redskins have made in the offense. He said the progress is about where he had expected, “but we’re not there yet.”

Shanahan said the Redskins do have more growing pains to work through. “You try to play your best football in November and December,” the coach said, and added that he is stressing the importance of improving “day by day.”

Shanahan praised the play of rookie Niles Paul on special teams, and said that strong play as a gunner earned Paul more opportunities as a receiver on Sunday.

Tim Hightower injured his shoulder early in Sunday’s game, Shanahan learned.

Shanahan said Rex Grossman just needs to “wipe it out” on his interceptions, and work toward getting better.

Cornerback Phillip Buchanon has yet to be activated, Shanahan said, because his shoulder is still bothering him. The Redskins are waiting to hear from the league on their options regarding a returning suspended player who is also injured. Adding Buchanon would require the release of one player from the 53-man roster. Buchanon was at Redskins Park on Monday.
