Quick Hits; Mike Shanahan says Jammal Brown hurt his hip running “gassers”

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan confirmed that tackle Jammal Brown has been placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list because of an injury to his hip. Shanahan said Brown was running well yesterday afternoon, but aggravated the hip during his “sixth or seventh gasser,” and will be evaluated by doctors. Shanahan said he didn’t know how long Brown will be sidelined.

Shanahan said Brown will have an MRI exam of his hip.

“I think it’s really hard for him,” Shanahan said. “He’s been working extremely hard to get in football shape, and he is in excellent shape, but he’s had a setback. We’ll get a chance for the doctors to look at it and see how it is.”

Shanahan said he didn’t know how long Brown would be sidelined, but he added that development isn’t totally surprising.

“Not really,” the coach said. “You knew it was sore. You knew it could happen at any time -- something like this. You just hope that it’s just a little flare-up, nothing major, and that he’ll be back.”

Shanahan said Tyler Polumbus and Maurice Hurt will split time at right tackle in place of Brown.

Safety Tanard Jackson also sat out practice, with a calf injury. Jackson, competing for the starting free safety job, missed time during OTAs with a shoulder injury but said he hopes to practice Monday. Shanahan said Jackson and running back Tristan Davis (knee) also are on the PUP list.

Shanahan said running back Tim Hightower (knee) is still limited but is making good progress.

Shanahan said the team’s new schedule, which features a walkthrough in the morning and practice in the afternoon, worked today. The team installed plays in morning meetings, then went over them in the walkthrough and repeated them during full practice.

Robert Griffin III and his receivers had some timing issues Thursday, but Shanahan said that’s expected on the first day of camp. Shanahan said he feels good about Leonard Hankerson, who went full speed after rehabbing from hip surgery this offseason.

Receivers Josh Morgan and guard Kory Lichtensteiger, who also suffered injuries last year, also went full speed.

Shanahan said cornerback Chase Minnifield tore his ACL on the last day of organized team activities. Minnifield was waived, but was not picked up by another team Tuesday and has been placed on Washington’s injured reserved list.
