Quick Hits: QB choice and Cooley surgery Wednesday; Lichtensteiger lost for the year

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said he isn’t ready to make an announcement on who will start at quarterback until Wednesday.

The coach said he has talked with his coaches but hasn’t made a decision yet. Shanahan said he will go with the player who gives him the best chance to win. He said he still believes in both quarterbacks, Rex Grossman and John Beck.

Shanahan said Beck played well despite not having reps with the first team. His performance “wasn’t perfect, but that’s expected. But he was prepared,.” Shanahan said.

Tight end Chris Cooley will have surgery on his broken left index finger Wednesday. Cooley also will get some opinions on his balky knee, the coach said.

Guard Kory Lichtensteiger did indeed tear his ACL, Shanahan said, and is lost for the year. There was concern on the Redskins players’ part that Lichtensteiger was hit and knocked down after the play was over, but Shanahan said the film didn’t show the play.

Rookie guard Maurice Hurt will be promoted from the practice squad to take Lichtensteiger’s spot on the roster.

It’s not yet known how long Trent Williams (high ankle sprain) will be out. Shanahan said “it’s a possibility” that right tackle Jammal Brown would move to left tackle, the position he played for the New Orleans Saints before he was traded to the Redskins.

Shanahan was pleased that Santana Moss expressed support for Grossman and said he expects all his players to support the quarterback regardless of who it is.
