Quick Hits: Redskins’ Wednesday practice

Coach Mike Shanahan said he still isn’t sure if quarterback John Beck will play Friday against Pittsburgh. Beck was held out of a second day of 11-on-11 drills. Kellen Clemens took all of the second team snaps.

Shanahan admitted there is some concern about Chris Cooley’s knee. Cooley has been ruled out of Friday’s game. His knee remains sore, and the team hopes treatment will help.

Shanahan said his kickers, Shayne Graham and Graham Gano, will flip a coin and alternate kicks on Friday. Gano was 7-for-8 with two 50-plus yarders. Graham was 3-for-7.

Ryan Kerrigan will play Friday although he won’t be used in a lot of plays because of limited knowledge of the schemes. Kerrigan missed a week of practice with his knee injury.

Shanahan said he might play the new defensive starters more than he usually would in a preseason opener so they can learn the schemes more.

Backup guard Artis Hicks remained sidelined with a concussion. Shanahan didn’t expect him to play Friday.

Brandon Banks, Aldrick Robinson, Terrence Austin and Niles Paul took turns returning punts in today’s practice.

Redskins coaches continue to keep Jarvis Jenkins busy. The second-round pick is listed as the backup to left end Adam Carriker, but Jenkins gets snaps at both right and left end and on the nickel package.

Lorenzo Alexander spent the first week-and-a-half of camp working at inside linebacker, but is back at outside linebacker as rookie Kerrigan’s backup.

Anthony Armstrong dusted Byron Westbrook for a 65-yard touchdown catch from Grossman. The corner had a hold of Armstrong’s jersey, but the wideout pulled free, got some separation and was off to the races.

Free agent offensive lineman Sean Locklear said last week that he feels more comfortable at right tackle. But the redskins have had Locklear - a starter in Seattle - working at backup left tackle and rookie Willie Smith as the second right tackle.
