Quick hits: ‘Rex won by an edge’

Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Rex Grossman will indeed be the starting quarterback. The coach said “I told you guys the truth, day by day, practices, games we evaluated. . . . It’s been very very close.”

Shanahan summarized all aspects of the quarterback’s responsibilities and said, “all in all I thought Rex did very well. John did too, but Rex won by an edge.”. . .

London Fletcher and DeAngelo Hall will be defensive captains, Shanahan said. Santana Moss will be offensive captain and Lorenzo Alexander will be special teams captain. . . .

Shanahan said that safety LaRon Landry and tight end Chris Cooley were both able to practice some today, although not fully. No decision has been made on their availability for Sunday’s game. Fletcher and safety Oshiomogho Atogwe both practiced fully and should be ready Sunday. . . .

Shanahan said if one of the starting guards got hurt, Erik Cook would come in as a center and Will Montgomery would move to guard. . . .

Some Redskins players have switched jersey numbers now that the roster has been cut from 80 players to 53 players. Tim Hightower now is sporting No. 25 after sporting 34 all of preseason. Roy Helu now is wearing 29 after sharing 26 with Josh Wilson. Markus White is now 55 after sharing 57 with Nick Sundberg, and Chris Neild is 95 after sharing 66 with Chris Chester during the preseason. Willie Smith is now No. 69 after sharing 72 with Stephen Bowen and Brandyn Thompson has gone from 40 to 32. Evan Royster has gone from 25 to 35. . . .

The team also added nose tackle Chris Baker and guard Eric Olsen to the practice squad today, completing the eight-man unit.

Mike Jones covers the Washington Redskins for The Washington Post. When not writing about a Redskins development of some kind – which is rare – he can be found screaming and cheering at one of his kids’ softball, baseball, soccer or basketball games.
