Redskins going younger

One of yesterday’s Insider posts featured a look at how Mike Shanahan has reshaped the roster from the Jim Zorn era, and we pointed out that just six starters (four on defense, two on offense) remain from the 2009 squad.

Shanahan’s goal this year appears to be to field a younger roster as well.

The average age of last year’s starting units (offense and defense combined) was 29 1 / 2 years of age. The average of this year’s two projected starting units is just under 271 / 2 years of age.

Now, will younger translate into better?

As of now, many players are penciled in as starters, and the lineups can change. But the defense could have as many as six new starters this year, and the offense could feature four new starters.

Here’s a look at last year’s Week 1 starting lineup and those players’ ages in comparison to the units Washington could go with in Week 1 of this season:
