Carolina receiver Steve Smith had 143 yards receiving. Running backs Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams combined for 103 on the ground. But it was Cam Newton who baffled the Redskins’ defense Sunday. He did it through the air, and he did it with his feet.
“The kid is a pretty Ferrari,” said cornerback DeAngelo Hall. “He can run. He can throw. He’s got the total package. He’s going to be a player in this league for a long time.”
Newton was 18 of 23 passing for 256 yards. He had one touchdown passing, another on the ground and zero interceptions. He finished with 59 yards on the ground and a quarterback rating of 127.5.
“I’ve got to take my hat off to Cam Newton,” Coach Mike Shanahan said. “He made some plays that most quarterbacks don’t make. He did a great job with feet, I thought he hung in the pocket, made some throws you don’t see many pros make, especially young players. So I take my hat off to him. That was one of the better days I’ve seen any rookie quarterback play.”
