Redskins must reach 53 today

The Washington Redskins must slash their roster from 80 players to 53 today. The team then will add eight players to the practice squad.

Some teams already have begun making cuts, and the Arizona Cardinals already have gotten down to the league-mandated 53.

Yesterday we took a look at the players who seemed to help and hurt their chances during the preseason finale.

There always could be some surprises, but here are our best guesses for the players who are safe so far.

Quarterback: John Beck and Rex Grossman

Running back: Tim Hightower, Roy Helu, Ryan Torain

Fullback: Darrel Young, Mike Sellers

Wide receiver: Santana Moss, Jabar Gaffney, Anthony Armstrong, Terrence Austin, Leonard Hankerson, Brandon Banks

Tight end: Chris Cooley, Fred Davis, Logan Paulsen

Offensive line: LT Trent Williams, LG Kory Lichtensteiger, C Will Montgomery, RG Chris Chester and RT Jammal Brown,T Sean Locklear, C/G Erik Cook and G Artis Hicks

Defensive line: NT Barry Cofield, DEs Stephen Bowen, Adam Carriker, Kedric Golston, Darrion Scott, NT Anthony Bryant

Linebackers: Brian Orakpo, Ryan Kerrigan, Rob Jackson, Lorenzo Alexander, London Fletcher, Rocky McIntosh, Perry Riley and Keyaron Fox

Cornerbacks: DeAngelo Hall, Josh Wilson, Kevin Barnes, Phillip Buchanon, Byron Westbrook

Safeties: LaRon Landry, Oshiomogho Atogwe, Reed Doughty, DeJon Gomes, Kareem Moore (pup)

Special teams: K Graham Gano, LS Nick Sundburg, P Sav Rocca
