Redskins players: Training camp starts Thursday (updated)

Update, 4:40: The Redskins on Monday afternoon announced that training camp will open on Thursday afternoon, contrary to what players and agents had been told to expect. The Redskins originally had planned for a July 28 start date, but considered bumping up camp's start a day. Coach Mike Shanahan ultimately decided to stick with Thursday.

FYI, Live chat: Rick Maese will be chatting at 1 p.m. today about the (apparent) end of the NFL lockout and the Redskins’ next moves.

Update, 10:15 a.m.: Wednesday -- according to two sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to give an official word – will be the check-in day for training camp, and it is believed Thursday and Friday would feature pad-free practices. Saturday likely would be the first practice in pads.

Free agency for all players is expected to begin Tuesday, but deals won’t become official right away. So the Redskins and other teams likely will open camp without a full roster, and additions will then begin trickling in several days into camp.

Original post: Washington players still scattered across the country have started making plans to head back to the Ashburn area in the coming days, and word is that the team will open training camp on Wednesday, according to players and agents reached Monday morning.

Players on Sunday evening had said they had heard that Wednesday would be the first day that the NFL would allow facilities to open their doors for voluntary workouts. Some said their agents had told them they believe the first mandatory date would be Friday. Others were under the impression that training camp itself could start as early as Wednesday. But things are kicking into high gear and changing rapidly, and it now sounds as if Redskins Park actually could open Tuesday, with camp opening the following day.

Teams could begin signing their own free agents and undrafted rookies as early as Monday night or Tuesday morning.

People within the Redskins organization said they, too, were still waiting on word from the league on when things will officially get underway.

Stay tuned.
