Redskins preseason: Griffin, starters will get 12-20 snaps against Bills Aug. 9

Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said Thursday that he plans to play rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III and the rest of his starters for 12 to 20 snaps when they open the preseason against the Buffalo Bills next Thursday.

The Redskins will play at Buffalo on Aug. 9. Shanahan said his plan for Griffin is no different than normal procedure for a starting quarterback. The following week, the coach plans to play Griffin and the starters for a half, and they likely will play into the third quarter the following week. Shanahan said he doesn’t usually play his starters in the fourth preseason game and expects to stick with that plan.

Shanahan believes that Griffin will be well prepared because he has seen a lot of 11-on-11 action that has featured down-and-distance and timed drills.

“We’re trying to put players in those situations that are game-like situations,” Shanahan said. “We’ve got everybody on the sideline, we’re playing it just like a game. You try to put a guy like Robert through as many game-type situations as possible, and hopefully it gets him ready a little bit quicker.”
