Redskins pursuing former Terp Madieu Williams

The Washington Redskins on Friday hosted free agent safety Madieu Williams, and extended the former Maryland Terrapin a contract offer, a person with knowledge of the situation said.

Williams, however, left Ashburn without accepting the offer, and has another free agent visit scheduled for Monday.

Drafted in the second round of the 2004 draft by Cincinnati, Williams played in 15 games for the San Francisco 49ers last season, but recorded only nine tackles and no interceptions.

The Redskins are looking to add competition for free safeties DeJon Gomes and Reed Doughty after releasing Oshiomogho Atogwe earlier this off-season.

The team last month signed former Viking Cedric Griffin, who has played cornerback during his six-year career, but could be used at free safety.
