The Washington Redskins have released free safety Oshiomogho Atogwe a year after signing him, a person with knowledge of the situation said.
Atogwe, who battled hamstring, knee and toe injuries and was in and out of the lineup last season, was owed a base salary of $3.4 million this season.
His injuries prevented him from living up to the reputation as a ballhawk that he carried during the first six years of his career in St. Louis. Washington is working to free up additional cap space entering free agency.
Reed Doughty and DeJon Gomes are the only safeties under contract for Washington with LaRon Landry set to hit the free agent market Tuesday.
