Redskins tackle Jammal Brown undergoes hip surgery

Injured tackle Jammal Brown had surgery to repair his problematic right hip last Thursday, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

Brown was projected to start at right tackle but reinjured the hip — the same that required surgery to repair a torn labrum in 2009 and has hobbled him the last two seasons — while running sprints on the eve of training camp.

Brown received two cortizone injections to the hip but they did little good. It was later learned that he had a torn ligament in his hip. The repair was made arthroscopically.

Brown is expected to go through a recovery time of four to six weeks, according to the source. He is expected to open the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, and will attempt to return to the field around midseason.

Tyler Polumbus has spent all of the preseason as first-team right tackle.
