Redskins take ILB Keenan Robinson in fourth round

The Washington Redskins used the 119th pick of the NFL Draft to provide depth at the inside linebacker position, drafting Keenan Robinson out of the University of Texas.

The 6-foot-3, 242-pound Robinson started 39 games at outside linebacker, but said that Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett told him that he will move inside for Washington.

Robinson, a former teammate of Redskins’ outside linebacker Brian Orakpo, said he feels fully comfortable with the switch, and started training for that position during the offseason.

“I made sure I was prepared for whatever position a team wanted me to play,” said Robinson, a two-time Butkus Award semifinalist. “Training for inside, I focused on using my hands. You have to work to get off blocks. But for me, I’m already big, already strong, already fast. But I have some things I need to work on… I feel like I’m one of the top coverage linebackers out there. My coverage skills show I can cover tight ends, running backs.”

Robinson played on all four special teams units during his four years at Texas, and said he expects to do so for the Redskins.

Inside linebacker was one of the positions the Redskins were expected to address. The team re-signed London Fletcher, but he turns 37 next month. They could groom Robinson as his successor.
