Roy Helu expects to play for Redskins vs. Eagles

Washington Redskins rookie running back Roy Helu said he fully anticipates returning to action in the season finale at Philadelphia on Sunday. Helu said the injuries that hampered him last week feel “a lot better.”

Helu, who had started four consecutive games prior to last Saturday – rushing for 100 yards in three of them, was inactive for Washington’s Christmas Eve loss to the Minnesota Vikings because of knee and toe injuries.

Helu, Washington’s fourth-round draft pick out of Nebraska, played with the injuries two weeks ago against the New York Giants, but mustered only 53 yards on 23 carries.

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said Helu was tested three hours before Saturday’s game, but couldn’t push off without pain. Fellow rookie Evan Royster got the start and rushed for a career-high 132 yards on 19 carries.

“It was very different [watching],” Helu said. “Very different. Evan did a great job, though. He got our offense going down the field.”

When asked if he expected to return to action this week, Helu said, “Yeah, absolutely. There’s nothing holding me back.”
