Ryan Torain expected to miss seven to 10 days with broken hand

Washington Redskins running back Ryan Torain is expected to miss seven to 10 days of training camp after four screws were inserted in the top of his fractured left hand, coach Mike Shanahan said Thursday evening.

Torain injured the hand while being tackled during an 11-on-11 scrimmage during Wednesday morning’s practice.

Torain was taken for X-rays on the hand immediately after the practice, and saw a hand specialist later Wednesday night. He wasn’t at either of the Redskins’ practice sessions Thursday.

With Torain out, recent acquisition Tim Hightower and rookie Roy Helu took the bulk of the first-team carries during Thursday evening’s practice. The two – along with second-year pro Keiland Williams, rookie Evan Royster and third-year veteran James Davis – are expected to compete for the starting running back job in Torain’s absence.

Injuries have been a recurring problem for Torain, who is entering his third season. The Arizona State product missed the majority of his rookie season after tearing a ligament in his knee, and he missed all of the next season after shattering his elbow on a helmet.

A hamstring strain forced Torain out of four games in 2010. He finished the year with 10 games played and led the team in rushing with 742 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 4.5 yards a carry.
